Can a religion survive being stripped of its superstitions?

A recurring criticism I've face in this series is that I talk about religion but focus almost exclusively on the Judaeo-Christian tradition. In some ways that's fair, but given my concerns are with the broader features of religious belief, not the minutiae of doctrinal differences, I'm pretty confident that all or at least most of my main points apply to the monotheistic religions at least, and many are also relevant to others.

Himachal Pradesh, India -- Some say the dark age, age of vice - Kaliyuga (last of the four stages the world goes through as part of the cycle of yugas described in the Indian scriptures), is here now, or at least coming soon. Some even fear that at the end of 2012 the world as we know it will end.

I saw that ordinary people believe they have a self and that everyone they meet has a self. They think of it as within the body. Because it is not like that, I have shown that the self is not there in the way it is thought to be. This is expedient means, the right medicine.

December 8 is Bodhi Day which commemorates the Enlightenment of the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama. Though there are a variety of ways that one might choose to recognize this holiday, as there are many sects of Buddhism and a range of specific customs within each of them, I will speak for myself as one trans-identified Western practitioner of Vipassana meditation within the Theravada tradition of Buddhism.
